About CLAST Essay

The essay portion of the CLAST exam is offered in paper/pencil format once each semester. Northwest Florida State College students enrolled in a degree-seeking program may register to take this exam during the regular registration period each semester. Refer to the listing below for testing dates and registration deadlines. There is no charge to take the Essay exam. Students that are required to take CLAST in order to receive their degree at another Florida institution, must have written permission from that institution prior to registering for any portion of the CLAST exam. You may register for the Essay portion of the CLAST at any Northwest Florida State College location or by clicking on the link to the RaiderNet Student Online System on this website.

About CLAST Reading / English / Math

The Reading, English, and Math portions of the CLAST are taken on computer. Northwest Florida State College students enrolled in a degree-seeking program may take these exams at no charge. There is a $30 fee, per sitting, for students who are NOT degree-seeking at Northwest Florida State College. Non-degree seeking students must have a written permission from their home institution prior to registering for any portion of the exam. Unofficial test scores are available to students immediately upon completion of the exam. A photograph is taken at check-in and stored for security purposes. You must pre-register for these portions of the CLAST, either in person at the Student Services Information Center, Building C1, Niceville Campus, by calling the Student Services Department at 850-729-6922, or by clicking on this link.

The testing schedule is as follows: Mondays 8:30 and 1:00; Tuesdays 8:30, 1:00 and 5:00; Thursdays 1:00; Fridays 8:30.


When can I take the CLAST?

Students who have completed 18 semester hours may register for the CLAST. In addition, those who have completed or are enrolling in their second Gordon Rule course in Math or English may register for those portions of the CLAST. In English those courses include ENC1101 and ENC1102. In Math, those courses include MAC1105, STA2023, MGF1106, MGF1107 or higher level courses. Those who meet one condition but not the other may register for that portion for which they are prepared. Refer to the current course schedule for additional CLAST information. Students who register for the CLAST but are found to be ineligible will be administratively withdrawn.


How do I qualify for a CLAST exemption?

The 1997 Florida Legislature authorized universities and community colleges to exempt AA degree seeking students from the requirement of passing the CLAST. To qualify for an exemption a student must meet one of the following conditions before completing the Associate of Arts degree:

  1. Achieve a minimum score of 500 on both the Verbal and Math sections of the SAT or an ACT score of 21 on the Math/English sections and 22 on Reading.
  2. Achieve a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above, on a 4.0 scale, in 6 semester hours of specific Gordon Rule English and Mathematics courses.

Retesting Procedures

Northwest Florida State College students required to re-test on any portion of the CLAST must enroll in and successfully complete a review course. These courses are as follows:

  • Essay - ENC1113
  • English - ENC1112
  • Reading - REA2125
  • Math - MGF2118

Refer to the current course schedule for reference numbers. Students may enroll in review courses at any Northwest Florida State College location or by clicking on the link to the RaiderNet Online Student System. Students will NOT be allowed to re-take any portion of the CLAST until they have satisfactorily completed review courses for a particular area.
