OWC Scholarships

Financial Aid

OWC offers a variety of local scholarships. The scholarship application period has ended for the 2006-2007 academic year. Plan now to apply for OWC scholarships for the 2007-2008 academic year. A scholarship application will be posted when the application period opens.

OKALOOSA & WALTON COUNTY SCHOLARSHIPS

The following scholarships are available through OWC. Each has separate guidelines and application process:

PRESIDENTIAL HONORS SCHOLARSHIP

Two scholarships are awarded each year to the top-ranked students from the ten area high schools in Okaloosa County and Walton County. In the event the top-ranked students do not plan to attend OWC, then the scholarships are awarded to the next highest ranked students in the class. The scholarships cover in-state tuition and fees for 60 credit hours of study at OWC. Students must enroll as a full-time student (minimum of 12 credit hours/term). Book costs are not included. Recipients must have recommendations from their high school principal and guidance counselor. A 2.0 grade point average at OWC must be maintained in order to continue receiving scholarship funds. Students must successfully complete the percentage of college coursework required by OWC's Federal Financial Aid Standard of Progress as stated in college catalog. Scholarship recipients must agree to enroll in SLS 1201, Community Service Seminar during the fall term of their freshman year. An OWC Honors Scholarship application must be completed and submitted to the OWC Financial Aid Office via the high school counselor.

MINORITY HONORS SCHOLARSHIP

One scholarship is awarded each year from each of the ten area high schools in Okaloosa County and Walton County to the top academic African-American student who plans to attend OWC on a full-time basis (minimum 12 credit hours/term). In the event the top-ranked African- American student does not plan to attend OWC, then the scholarship is awarded to the next highest ranked student in the class. The scholarship covers instate tuition and fees for 60 credit hours of study at OWC. Book costs are not included. Recipients must have recommendations from their high school principal and guidance counselor. A 2.0 grade point average at OWC must be maintained in order to continue receiving scholarship funds. Students must successfully complete the percentage of college coursework required by OWC's Federal Financial Aid Standard of Progress as stated in college catalog. Scholarship recipients must agree to enroll in SLS 1201, Community Service Seminar during the fall term of their freshman year. An OWC Minority Honors Scholarship application must be completed and submitted to the OWC Financial Aid Office via the high school counselor.

LEADERSHIP AWARDS

Each area high school in Okaloosa County and Walton County receives a minimum of three and a maximum of eight leadership awards per school depending on the senior class size. Forty-eight scholarships are awarded annually within the two-county district. Leadership awards are in the amount of $500 to be used towards tuition and fees. Recipients must be graduating seniors that have demonstrated a high degree of leadership ability within their high school, with the potential for continuing leadership ability in college. Recipients must plan to attend OWC on a full-time basis. Recommendations for the awards are made by high school guidance counselors to the OWC Financial Aid Office during April of each academic year.

FINE & PERFORMING ARTS SCHOLARSHIPS

Auditions are held each spring by the Fine and Performing Arts Division Director. Scholarships are awarded in Show Choir, Orchestra, Theatre, Dance, Jazz Band, Visual Arts, and Madrigals. Scholarships are awarded to cover tuition and fees up to 30 credit hours per academic year. Book costs are not included. Interested applicants should contact the Fine and Performing Arts Director at the OWC Niceville Campus for application and audition information.

ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS

Recipients of these scholarships are selected by OWC Head Coaches in Men & Women's Basketball, Baseball and Softball. Each scholarship provides full tuition, fees, and books. Awards for room and board may be included at the discretion of the OWC Athletic Director. Interested applicants should contact the OWC Athletic Office at the OWC Niceville Campus for additional information. Each sport is supported with a one-year, (30 credit hour), renewable, Manager Scholarship.

FORENSICS TEAM/BRAIN BOWL TEAM SCHOLARSHIPS

Recipients of these scholarships are selected by OWC's Coordinator of Student Activities. Tuition and fees up to 30 credit hours per academic year may be awarded. Book costs are not included. Recipients are required to participate on the OWC Forensics Team or Brain Bowl Team. Interested applicants should contact the OWC Coordinator of Student Activities for application information.

PACESETTERS SCHOLARSHIP

The Pacesetters Scholarship has been established to assist African-American males who graduated from Okaloosa and Walton County schools. Five $1,000 awards shall be made to students selected for this program. Recipients must attend OWC full-time and apply for federal aid. This scholarship is renewable for a second year of study at OWC provided the recipient maintains the minimum grade point average and successfully completes the percentage of college coursework required by OWC's Federal Financial Aid Standards of Academic Progress as stated in the college catalog. Contact the OWC Financial Aid Office for an application. Scholarship recipients must agree to enroll in SLS 1201, Community Service Seminar during the fall term of their freshman year.

AFRO-ACADEMIC, CULTURAL, TECHNOLOGICAL, AND SCIENTIFIC OLYMPICS (ACT-SO)

In recognition of outstanding achievement, a two-year scholarship (60 instate credits) will be awarded to each student from the OWC District who places first (gold medal winners) in four academic disciplines: Sciences, Humanities, Performing, and Visual Arts, in the competition of the Okaloosa County ACT-SO Branch hosted each year by the College. These offers are valid for one calendar year from the recipient's date of high school graduation. Recipients must attend OWC on a full-time basis as a degree-seeking student. Second year awards are renewable if the student maintains the minimum grade point average and successfully completes the percentage of college coursework required by OWC's Federal Financial Aid Standards of Academic Progress as stated in the college catalog.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION

The student elected to serve as President of the Student Government Association receives a scholarship while he/she is in office. The scholarship covers up to 30 credit hours of tuition fees per academic year. Book costs are not included. REGIONAL STATE SCIENCE FAIR WINNERS/ALL-FLORIDA CHEMATHON EXAM

In recognition of outstanding achievement, a two-year scholarship (60 instate credits) will be awarded to each student from the OWC district who placed first in any senior category competition for the Florida State Science and Engineering Fair each year, or who earned a high score on the All-Florida Chemathon Exam. The Sciences Division Director will identify recipients of a high score on this exam. These offers are valid for one calendar year from the recipient's date of high school graduation. Recipients must attend OWC on a full-time basis as a degree-seeking student.

CHEERLEADER SCHOLARSHIPS

The OWC Athletic Director and/or his designee will select recipients. Awards will only be offered during the spring term and individual student awards will not exceed the cost of 12 instate credit hours. Recipients are required to be active members of the OWC Cheerleading Squad. Interested applicants should contact the OWC Athletic Director at the Niceville Campus.

OWC FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

The 2008-09 OWC Foundation Scholarship Application process is now online. Click here for information and to complete the application.

Application Deadline for Health Sciences and Nursing Students is July 3, 2008.
(Application deadline has past for other students.)

The Northwest Florida State College Foundation administers numerous scholarship awards to students who attend OWC. The annual scholarship awards cover tuition and lab fees. Award amounts range from $100 to $1200. Book costs may be included at the donor's discretion. Students must have and maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.5 to be eligible to receive the majority of Foundation scholarship funds. In addition, many of the scholarships require financial need and a demonstration of commitment to community volunteer service. The scholarships are non-transferable. Candidates must have met all of OWC's admission requirements as a degree-seeking student. Applications for the Foundation scholarships are normally available during the spring from all area high school guidance counselors and from the OWC Financial Aid Office and on the web. Only one Foundation Scholarship may be awarded to a student. Applicants need only complete one Foundation scholarship application to be considered for all appropriate Foundation scholarships. Award is for two years at OWC and a an additional amount for two academic years at any upper division four-year state university in the Florida State University System. Awards are based primarily on financial need, hence they will not normally be made to students from upper income families or those receiving scholarships of equal or higher value. In addition to graduating high school seniors, applications are welcome from non-traditional students, students already enrolled at OWC, and part-time students.
