General Information

Allied Health Programs: Surgical Technology

IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING ADMISSION TO THE SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

Due to limited local job opportunities in the field, Northwest Florida State College will not be offering the Surgical Technology certificate program during 2008-09 and is not currently accepting applications to that program.  Although the college has no immediate plans to close the program, there will be a hiatus in the admission process.  In the meantime, we encourage you to consider one of the other health-related programs offered by the college, including a new AAS Degree in Health Care Management, anticipated for fall 2008.  This two-year degree will offer current and future Surgical Technologists, as well as other students, a career ladder which adds communication, general health-care related knowledge and supervisory skills to the technical competencies of the certificate.  Students interested in this new associate degree opportunity may begin working on general education courses or other program-specific classes as early as summer 2008.  See the FAQ’s which follow.

FAQs ABOUT SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY
  1. Question:  Is the Surgical Technology Program closing?
Answer:  No!  Admissions to the Surgical Technology Program will be closed for the 2008-09 school year only.
  2. Question:  Why will admissions to the Program be closed for 2008-09?
Answer:   Admissions will be closed in order to account for the less than robust local job market for surgical technologists as well the limited number & kinds of clinical experiences available for STS students.
  3. Question:  What alternatives can I take to pursue my Surgical Technology career?
Answer:  You have at least three alternatives:  (1) wait to apply to the Northwest Florida State College Surgical Technology Program at a later date, hopefully, in 2009; (2) change your program of study to another Northwest Florida State College health program or (3) begin work on the Associate of Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.) requirements leading to the A.A.S. degree in Health Care Management.
  4. Question:  If I wait to apply for a future Northwest Florida State College Surgical Technology Program offering, when can I apply?
Answer:  You can watch for announcements regarding future admissions on the Northwest Florida State College website:  www.nwfstatecollege.edu.
  5. Question:  If I change my program of study to another health program, what do I need to do?
Answer:  See the Northwest Florida State College website for your program of choice and follow all steps in applying to that program, paying close attention to the application deadline for that program.
  6. Question:  If I want to work on the A.A.S. Degree in Health Care Management, how can I get started?
Answer:  (1) Contact Ms. Sandy Bishop:  850-729-5271 for an appointment regarding general education courses you can take toward the degree; (2) make an appointment to take the FCPT, Florida College Placement Test.  If your scores indicate a need for remediation, Ms. Bishop can advise you of required courses. (3) About the A.A. S. Degree:  “The A.A.S. Degree is a two-year, non-transfer college credit curricula designed to prepare students for employment in various technical and semi-professional fields.  The A.A.S. degree consists of a minimum of 60 college credits, of which at least 18 are general education courses.  Because the A.A.S. Degree is not intended for transfer, the selection of general education and technical courses is broader and more flexible than that of the A.S. Degree.  Students may earn multiple A.A.S. Degrees provided the program requirements are satisfied for each separate degree” (Northwest Florida State College Catalog, 2007-2008, page 58).
