SGA Blood Drive Once Again Sets Record!

02/14/08 - OWC students and staff once again stepped up to the challenge of donating blood during the SGA Spring Blood Drive held Wednesday, February 13, 2008. Donations collected surpassed the previous record -- useable units of donated blood totaled 116 pints, topping the 103 pints collected during the record breaking fall semester blood drive. Other impressive statistics included the 18 Alyx donors and the 50 individuals who donated blood for the first time during this blood drive.

SGA thanks the Florida Association of Community Colleges (FACC)and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts for their generous donations. A big thank you also goes out to radio stations 99 Rock Z96 for broadcasting from K Mall. Most of all, a HUGE thank you to the students, staff, and faculty at OWC. We could not have done it without your blood! Your blood donations will assist up to 348 members of our community!!
Brain Bowl Team wins Regional Title

02/04/08 - The Okaloosa-Walton College (OWC) Brain Bowl Team became the Florida Community College Activities Association (FCCAA) Panhandle Regional Champions on February 1 and 2 at OWC. The OWC team has won the right to go to the FCCAA State Brain Bowl Tournament at Chipola College on March 27-29, 2008 in Marianna, Florida.

The team members that competed were: Danielle Stephen of Freeport, a Collegiate High student; Gabriel Hernandez of Niceville; Andrew Birr of Fort Walton Beach; John Beirne of Niceville, Captain; and David Meyer of Crestview. At this tournament the team competed against six other state community college teams: Chipola College Gold and Blue team, North Florida Community College, Gulf Coast Community College, PJC, & Tallahassee Community College. OWC finished with a record of 4-2 during the round robin competition, and then won the championship round to bring home the title. The championship round was exciting with a close win over the Chipola Blue team.
Scholarships Available

06/06/07 - The OWC Brain Bowl is recruiting members for the 2007-2008 team. We have scholarships available for members and can use people with skills in Math, Science, and Humanities. For perspective recruits please contact the team coach, Aimee Watts, at wattsa@owc.edu or 729-5277.

Brain bowl currently meets every Tuesday and Thursday at 2:30-4:30 pm.
OWC State Champs in Brain Bowl

04/02/07 - The Okaloosa-Walton College Brain Bowl Team captured the state championship title as the top academic team in Florida at a recent competition held in Panama City. It was the third time in the past five years that OWC has been named the state champions. The team also boasted an undefeated season, winning every tournament they entered this year.

At the Florida Community College Activities Association tournament, held March 30 and 31, at Gulf Coast Community College, the OWC team competed against ten other state community college teams and was victorious in every match with a perfect record of 9-0 during the round robin competition. The OWC team won the championship achieving the highest score in recent academic team history with 705 points to defeat Gulf Coast Community Colleges team who earned 210 points in the final round. The state championship team members include Emily Hooper of Destin; Ivan Hernandez of Niceville; Griffin Bogart of DeFuniak Springs; and Iric Schoenfeld of Niceville. Team captain Emily Hooper, a student at the OWC Collegiate High School, ranked first in total individual points scored out of more than 40 other college participants at the state tournament and she became the first woman academic team member to receive the FCCAA Dave Ehlert High Point Award and be named the State's Most Valuable Player. Ivan Hernandez, another Collegiate High School student who competes on the OWC college team, received the All-Star Player award and had the states second highest individual point total. OWC received the additional honor of having Coach Mike Van Dyke selected as The FCCAA Roger Raepple Brain Bowl Coach of the Year.
