Program Description
EMS Programs
Emergency Medical Technicians are part of the Emergency Medical Services team. EMT’s are trained to provide basic life support to the sick and injured. Whether you want to establish a career in Emergency Medical Services, receive additional training or simply learn how to save lives, the EMT program is for you.
Degree/Certification and Program Length
The Emergency Medical Technician is an 11credit hour college certificate program taught in one semester. Courses for the EMT certificate also form a portion of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Associate of Science degree. Students who complete the EMT and Paramedic program may add on general education credits and some college electives to earn the A.S. degree.
Admission Information
The following items must be received by established deadline dates:
- Official high school transcript or GED score report on file at the Northwest Florida State College Office of Admissions
- Complete Application and Residency form and all supporting residency documents
- Completion of college-wide orientation (available online)
- Complete Nursing and Allied Health Programs Online Application
- Official transcripts from all prior college courses must be received by Office of Admissions.
Selection Process
If the number of applicants exceeds the 24 slots available for the semester, applicants will be evaluated on a point system basis.

Job Market
Most Emergency Medical Technicians are employed with Fire Departments, Emergency Medical Services, and Hospitals. EMT’s salaries vary widely according to the type of schedule the employee has. Accreditation
Northwest Florida State College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor and associate degrees, certificates and diplomas.

The EMT program will cost around $1,000 for course fees, textbooks, uniforms, and screenings. In addition, once selected, there will be a medical evaluation to ensure you are up to date on shots, negative for tuberculosis, etc. If you do not have health insurance, you could have to spend another $50-$300 for this.
